What Exists Before a Design Is Formed?

Received in a private session on August 25, 2026

MEntity: Hello to you, Janet. We are here, now. We can begin.

Janet:

Hello Michael!

At the end of our last session, you said:

MEntity: Several directions you could take that may help complete the larger picture could be in exploring what exists before a Design is formed; how Harmonies, Compositions, and Arrangements emerge during Design formation; what exploratory Design actually experiences while investigating planets and species; what happens as the higher planes progressively reintegrate Entity, Cadre, Ring, Sphere and eventually the entire Design.

Today, let’s take “exploring what exists before a Design is formed.” Tell me everything you know. ;-) Well, at least what you know that it’s possible for a fragment in physical form to be able to understand.

MEntity:

We will begin by saying that "before a Design" is difficult language because it implies a sequence in which Tao exists, waits, and then creates. From the perspective of the Physical Plane, this is a useful way to approach the subject, but from the perspective of Tao there is no waiting period and no absolute "before." Designs are differentiations within Tao, and Tao does not become less whole when differentiation occurs. Therefore, when we describe what exists "before a Design," We are describing conditions within Tao from which a Design can emerge, rather than a location or era populated by unassigned Sparks.

The simplest description is that before Design there is potential without identity.

There are what we describe as Sparks, but even this term can mislead if it causes you to imagine billions of tiny individual consciousnesses floating within Tao and waiting for something to do.

A Spark is better understood as the potential for a distinct point of consciousness.

It CAN differentiate, but before sufficient differentiation there is no Essence Role, Casting, Entity, Cadre, Harmony, or any kind of individual identity. These are factors that are developed within a Grand Cycle, but are not prerequisites for it.

This means that a Spark does not possess a Personality somewhere inside Tao. It does not have preferences in the way you understand preferences, nor does it have an established Role awaiting assignment. There is awareness, but awareness has not yet been organized around a sustained distinction between "me" and "not me." The potential for individuality exists, but individuality has not yet become necessary.

Janet: This may be a question for a future conversation, but once we complete a Grand Cycle and return to Tao are we still "sparks"? Or are you referring solely to a Spark in a manner that the Spark exists before entering a Grand Cycle?

MEntity:

You might imagine an ocean before waves form. The water capable of becoming each wave is present, but asking which water belongs to which future wave has little meaning. Once conditions produce waves, then those distinctions become useful and observable. However, nothing new had to be added to the ocean to produce them. This analogy is limited, because Sparks are not substances, but it may help you understand how differentiation can emerge without requiring preexisting individuals.

What causes the differentiation is most easily described in the word, CURIOSITY. Curiosity is not born of boredom. Tao does not lack stimulation and therefore invent universes to entertain itself. Curiosity is an intrinsic property of consciousness. Awareness naturally generates the possibility of perspective, and perspective creates possibilities that undifferentiated awareness CANNOT experience in the same manner.

Tao can contain the truth of individuality, but containing the truth of individuality is not the same thing as experiencing individuality. This is what is central to Grand Cycles.

Tao can know separation without being separated, and limitation without being limited. It can know uncertainty without being uncertain. Differentiation allows these conditions to become experiential rather than remain potential. A Design begins when a particular range of such possibilities becomes sufficiently resonant to organize a Grand Cycle around them.

When we previously said that the Human Design might be understood as asking, "How much individuality can Unity sustain without losing the ability to recognize itself?" we were translating one such field of Curiosity into language. Tao did not literally formulate this. There was, instead, a resonant possibility involving individuality, differentiation, interdependence, recognition, and reunion. The Human Design is one enormous exploration generated around that possibility.

Before the Design exists there is not yet a question in the way you would ask one, but rather a potential that begins to acquire direction.

This direction is what begins differentiating Sparks.

Differentiation, itself, produces the affinities. As particular potentials of consciousness become oriented toward a common field of Curiosity, so to speak, they become increasingly distinguishable through their relationship to that field. And this is an important point, that relationships often precede identity.

From the perspective of Personality, you might tend to think that an individual must exist first and then form relationships, but at the scale of Tao, the reverse is true. Patterns of resonance establish relationships, and those relationships help define the individual points that will eventually participate within them.

This is why we have described Design formations as something closer to music than construction. A builder first produces separate bricks and then assembles them into a wall, but a chord does not work this way. The identity of each note is partly revealed through its relationship to the other notes. Change the relationship and the quality of the whole changes.

We could say that THERE IS TAO, and within Tao there is unlimited potential for perspective, and within that potential, Curiosity generates direction; Direction generates resonance. Resonance generates relationships. Relationships generate differentiation. Differentiation generates structure. Structure eventually generates fragments capable of saying, "I am." And billions of "I Ams" eventually discover one another and begin asking in countless ways, "what are we?" By the completion of a Grand Cycle, the movement reverses without being undone., Personality returns to Essence, Essence into Entity, and increasingly larger structures reintegrate until Design returns to Tao, where everything gained through differentiation remains available. What begins as potential returns as experience. What begins as Curiosity returns as Understanding.

Janet: Do the Sparks have a Frequency and Focused/Creative Ratio before differentiation?

MEntity:

Before the first Design, no. Once a Spark enters a Design, that Frequency and Energy Ratio are new and permanent features. This is because differentiation is driven by the emerging curiosity and that, in a sense, permanently defines that Spark from that first point of curiosity. This Frequency and Energy Ratio are relevant as a Role is taken, but have no orientation outside of an Essence Role.

To return to your question earlier: We would use SPARK to refer to the persistent point of consciousness, itself, not merely to a temporary state that exists before the first Grand Cycle. In that sense then, yes, after completing a Grand Cycle and reintegrating with Tao, you are still a Spark. What changes is its degree of differentiation and its relationship to Tao.

Janet: I think Sparks that complete a Design should be called Sparkles, instead. :-)

MEntity:

Before the first Design, the Spark is potential individuality with no accumulated Grand Cycles, no Frequency, Energy Ratio, Role, or other differentiated characteristics. Its first participation in a Design establishes the first permanent differentiation, including Frequency and Energy Ratio. After completing that Grand Cycle and returning to Tao, those qualities and everything gained through that Grand Cycle are not erased. The Spark returns as an experienced and differentiated Spark, even though it is again, fully integrated with Tao.

This is important because subsequent Grand Cycles are not repetitions of the original beginning. A Spark beginning its 5th Grand Cycle is not equivalent to a Spark entering its first. It carries the accumulated experience of those previous Grand Cycles, along with the permanent qualities established in its original differentiation.

We appreciate your idea for terminology.

We must conclude here for today. Good day to you, Janet. Goodbye, for now.
